Abiding Savior is a member of the
Association of Free Lutheran Congregations.
Our beliefs are summed up in the Apostle’s Creed, The Nicene Creed, Luther’s Small Catechism, and the Augsburg Confession.
The Apostle's Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Nicene Creed
I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only‐begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
Luther's Small Catechism
Written to be used as a resource for parents to teach their children the Christian faith, the Small Catechism continues to serve as a faithful and helpful guide in summarizing the Christian faith for us today.
The Augsburg Confession
The Augsburg Confession is the classic summary of what Lutherans believe about God, humanity, sin, faith, the church, and the sacraments.
We Value...
Preaching & Teaching
We value relevant preaching and teaching of God’s Holy Word. We believe that the Bible is God’s inspired, inerrant, and infallible word (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Therefore, we will equip disciples through the preaching and teaching of His word.
Worship
We value reverent and meaningful worship. We believe that we are to worship the Father in spirit and in truth (John 4:23). Therefore, our worship offers a framework for offering our love and devotion to Him and communing with Him.
Prayer
We value the power of prayer. We believe that God desires us to draw near to Him in prayer. (Philippians 4:6). Therefore, we will encourage and practice personal and corporate prayer in all circumstances.
Caring
We value the importance of caring for others. We believe that we are the lips, hands and feet of Christ. (Galatians 6:2). Therefore, we will show His love to others by attending to their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.
Stewardship
We value appropriate stewardship of God’s gifts. We believe that whatever has been given to each individual is a gift from God (Romans 12:6-8). Therefore, we will encourage the giving of time, talent and treasures, each according to ability, for the building up of His kingdom.
Family & Children
We value family as a foundation for growth and service. We believe that all God’s children need to continually serve him (Joshua 24:15). Therefore, we will provide opportunities for learning, sharing and serving to all men, women and children.
Evangelism
We strive to improve in our outreach through evangelism. We believe God sends us to make disciples (Matthew 28:19-20) and proclaim the Gospel of salvation in Christ alone. Therefore, we aspire to be improved stewards of our opportunity to witness for Him.
Obedience
We strive to constantly improve in our obedience to our Lord. We believe obedience to our Lord is the greatest expression of love and faith in Him (John 14:15). Therefore, we aspire to grow in our obedience to Him, directing our lives all the more in accordance with His Word and encouraging and exhorting one another in love.
Fellowship
We strive to improve in our relationship with fellow believers and those who are seeking the Lord. We believe God’s love is displayed through the love of others (1 Peter 4:8-10). Therefore, we aspire to welcome all to His house, to speak the truth in love, provide encouragement and support, and build a sense of fellowship with those in our church family and beyond.
We Believe...
Divine Inspiration
The Old and New Testaments are inspired by God, true, authoritative, and sufficient (Psalm 19:7-11; 2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20-21).
Only One God
There is only one God (Deuteronomy 6:4; Isaiah 45:5-6; Isaiah 46:9-10; John 17:3; 1 Corinthians 8:4-6; 1 Timothy 2:5).
The Trinity
The Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Spirit is God. There are not three Gods but One Triune God (Genesis 1:26; Psalm 45:6-7; Psalm 110:1; Matthew 3:13-17; Matthew 28:17-20; 1 Corinthians 12:14-6).
All Have Sinned
Every human being is by nature and action a sinner (Genesis 6:5; Psalm 51:5; Jeremiah 17:9; Romans 3:23; 5:8; 12-21; 7:18; Ephesians 2:1-3).
Death is the Penalty for Sin
The just and deserved penalty for sin is death, both physical and spiritual (Genesis 2:15-17; Genesis 3:19; Romans 5:12; 6:23; James 1:14-15).
Jesus - God and Man
Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, was born of a virgin and is both fully God and fully human (Matthew 1:20; Luke 2:52; John 1:1-4; Colossians 1:15-20; Hebrews 1:1-3).
Jesus Paid the Penalty For Our Sin
Jesus Christ died as my substitute to pay the penalty for my sin (John 1:29; 10:1-18; Romans 5:8; 1 Corinthians 15:1-4; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Galatians 1:4; 1 Peter 3:18).
Jesus Is Risen
Jesus Christ physically rose from the dead to conquer death on my behalf (Matthew 28:1-20: Mark 16:1-8: Luke 24:1-53: John 1:20-21;25: 1 Corinthians 15:12-34).
Jesus Ascended
Jesus Christ physically ascended into heaven and will one day physically return (John 14:3; Acts 1:11; 1 Thessalonians 4:16; Hebrews 9:28; 1 John 3:2; Revelation 1:7).
Jesus Will Return
When Christ returns there will be a physical resurrection of the dead. Those who trust in Jesus Christ alone will be raised to eternal reward. Those who have not trusted in Jesus Christ will be raised to eternal punishment (Matthew 25:31-46; John 5:28-29; Acts 24:15 ).Only by grace, through faith, in Christ Jesus, are we reconciled to God and forgiven of our sins (John 3:18, 14:6; Acts 4:12; Romans 3:21-26; 1 Timothy 2:5-6).
The Holy Spirit Dwells Within
Those in Christ Jesus are in-dwelt by the Holy Spirit who calls, convicts, guides, and comforts them.
We Are To Be Holy
Those in Christ Jesus are called to live holy and blameless lives, being set apart from the world (Romans 6 and 12).
We Are Called
Those in Christ Jesus are called and empowered to bear witness to the death and resurrection of Jesus for the forgiveness of sins to all the world (Acts 1:8; Matthew 28:18-20).
God Draws Sinners to Himself
In order to offer and convey to men the merits which Christ has secured for the world by His death on the cross (2 Cor. 5:21; Rom. 5:18), God employs certain external, visible means through which the Holy Spirit works and preserves faith and thus accomplishes the sinner’s salvation. These means include the Word of God, Baptism, and the Lord’s Supper (Acts 2:37-41; Romans 6:1-11; 1 Corinthians 11:1-34).
